What does it take to turn an idea into an app that is live on the App Store and Google Play? Native versus cross-platform, the store processes, and what drives the cost.
What is mobile app development?
Mobile app development is the process of designing, building, testing and publishing apps that run on iOS (iPhone, iPad) and Android devices on the App Store and Google Play. It continues after launch: keeping up with operating system updates, fixing bugs and adding features lasts for the whole life of the app.
Native or cross-platform?
With native development each platform is written in its own language: Swift for iOS, Kotlin for Android. It gives the best performance and full access to platform-specific features, but means two separate codebases. Cross-platform frameworks such as Flutter and React Native ship to both platforms from one codebase; for most content and business apps they are the most efficient route in time and cost. That is how we shipped Senoz Ekovadi on iOS and Android.
The process, step by step
Discovery (target users and core features), design (flows and interface), development (usually two-week cycles), testing on real devices, store preparation and launch. Keeping the first release small (an MVP) lets you invest in the right features based on real user feedback.
Store processes
The Apple Developer Program is a yearly membership, while a Google Play developer account opens with a one-time registration fee. Apple reviews every release before it goes live; requirements such as a privacy policy, data-use disclosures and in-app purchase rules need to be planned from the start. That is why we published WaveTuner’s privacy policy page on our site when we launched it.
What drives the cost?
The number of screens and features; foundations such as user accounts and payments; capabilities such as maps, notifications and offline use; the need for an admin panel; and integrations are the main cost drivers. Post-launch maintenance and server costs belong in the budget from the start too.
What successful apps share
They open fast, do one job very well, do not ask for unnecessary permissions and are updated regularly. On the store side, the right title, good screenshots and reviews directly affect downloads; our ASO guide covers that.
Mobile apps with WaveArc
We build iOS and Android apps from idea to store: Senoz Ekovadi and our own product WaveTuner are live on the App Store and Google Play. You can see our process on our Mobile Apps service page.
