What is DevOps? The basics of CI/CD, cloud and automation

DevOps is the culture and set of practices that brings software development and operations into a single flow. CI/CD, infrastructure as code, monitoring, and the concrete benefits DevOps brings to a business.

What does DevOps mean?

DevOps combines “development” and “operations”. It is a culture that removes the wall between the team that builds software and the team that runs it on servers, plus the tools that support that culture. The goal is simple: ship changes more often, more safely and with less stress.

What is CI/CD?

Continuous integration (CI) means every code change is built and tested automatically. Continuous delivery or deployment (CD) means a change that passes the tests is automatically prepared for release, or released. A pipeline built with tools such as GitHub Actions ends “it worked on my machine” and lets a critical security patch ship within hours.

Infrastructure as code

With tools such as Terraform, servers, networks and databases are defined as code (infrastructure as code). Environments become reproducible, changes can be reviewed, and after a disaster the infrastructure can be rebuilt quickly. Applications packaged with Docker run the same everywhere; Kubernetes takes care of scaling and managing those packages.

Monitoring and observability

Shipping is half the job. Error rates, response times and resource usage should be watched continuously, and a problem should alert the team before it reaches users. Logs, metrics and traces together answer “what happened?” with data instead of guesses.

How do you measure DevOps?

The four key metrics popularized by Google’s DORA research are a good start: deployment frequency, lead time for changes, change failure rate and time to restore service after an incident. As these improve, the team works both faster and more safely.

DevOps for small teams

DevOps is not only for large companies. Even a website on a single server is far safer with automated builds, automated backups, dependency security alerts and simple uptime monitoring. What matters is moving every repetitive manual step into automation over time.

Cloud / DevOps at WaveArc

We set up infrastructure on AWS, Google Cloud and your own servers, build CI/CD pipelines, monitoring and cost optimization. You can see our approach on our Cloud / DevOps service page.
